Dr. K.R. Koundal, is the Project Director at this institute. He has obtained his Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology from University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, after obtaining M.Sc in Biochemistry from IARI, New Delhi. He specializes in Plant Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Isolation & cloning of plant genes, DNA sequencing and gene expression, protein isolation and characterization in plants. He has also done various training courses in Radiation safety, Computer applications, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Dr. Koundal has published over 70 research papers in reputed national and international journals. He has also presented more than 60 papers in leading national and international symposia in the field of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, contributed 10 book chapters, edited 9 training manuals and 3 post-graduate students course manuals which have been highly acclaimed. He is a distinguished member of the Task Force on Basic Sciences and Agricultural Biotechnology, DBT, Govt. of India. He has been serving as a member of the academic councils of various institutes in the country including IARI, New Delhi, JNU, New Delhi, ANGRAU, Hyderabad, Guest faculty, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra and RAU, Udaipur. He also has the distinction of receiving various prestigious fellowships and numerous awards in recognition to his excellent academic and research contributions. The major ones include Best Teacher Award, IARI, New Delhi (1996), ICAR Outstanding Teacher Award (1997), Dr. R.D. Asana Endowment Prize (1986-89), National Overseas Fellowship during Ph.D. programme in Canada, INSA Royal Society Post Doctoral Fellowship,UK, FAO fellowship as a visiting fellow at the University of Virginia, USA, World Bank Fellowship as Adjunct Professor at University of Washington, USA, etc.
